Frequently Asked Questions of Rinjani Trekking

Is Mount Rinjani safe to climb?

Yes, Mount Rinjani is safe to climb, As Indonesia’s second-highest volcano (3,726 m), it presents a challenging physical trek, but strict National Park regulations and professional mountain management ensure high safety standards for all hikers.

Rinjani is a challenging trek (graded 4/5) due to steep inclines and loose volcanic gravel near the top. Beginners with strong physical fitness can reach the summit, but it is not recommended for young children (generally 12+ with outdoor experience is advised).

  • 2D1N: Fast-paced; covers either Crater Rim Senaru only OR Crater Rim Sembalun + Summit push (returns same way).
  • 3D2N: The classic full route (Sembalun to Summit, down to Segara Anak Lake, and out via Senaru).
  • 4D3N: The relaxed version of the 3D2N route, offering extra time at the lake and hot springs.

Total trekking distance for a full circuit is roughly 30–35 km. You start around 1,100 Masl (Sembalun) or 600 meters (Senaru), climb to Plawangan Sembalun (~2,639 Masl), and reach the summit at 3,726 MASL.

Focus on cardio and leg endurance 4–6 weeks before departure: trail running, stair climbing with a loaded backpack, squats, lunges, and long-distance walking.

Light rain is manageable with proper rain gear. However, heavy downpours or thunderstorms can make loose gravel trails slippery and dangerous, especially along the ridge lines and descent paths. Guides adjust itineraries if conditions become unsafe.

Signal is spotty. Telkomsel offers decent coverage at Sembalun Crater Rim, but signal disappears down at the lake and inside deep valleys.
